Atrip on the Inlandsbanan (Inland Railway) is an enjoyable way of seeing some of Sweden’s most dramatic scenery. The route stretches through the Central Heartlands from Mora in Dalarna to Gällivare in Lapland.

The idea of building such a long railway through a harsh and inaccessible landscape was first promoted in 1894, but it was to take another 40 years of hard labour before it was completed. The 1,100km (680-mile) line was finally inaugurated in Jokkmokk in Lapland on 6 August 1937, and a monument was erected to commemorate the event.

Today the train stops along the way so passengers can visit local artists and craftspeople or simply admire the views. Sometimes it has to halt to avoid running into herds of reindeer resting on the track. With luck, passengers may also spot elks or bears.

It is possible to make stopovers along the route and stay for a night or two in local towns and villages to do some walking in the mountains, or just enjoy the magnificent landscape. Various packages are available combining rail travel with hotel accommodation, or trekking. For more information contact Inlandsbanan AB, Box 561, SE-831 27 Östersund, Sweden.
